Piracy - A Disappointing Development

A while back, I touted that we had a 0% piracy rate of any of our products. I personally thought this was because of our uncharacteristic trust of our customers. We don't encode our products. We don't enforce licensing callbacks. We don't ask your URL when you purchase. We even provide support in non-customer areas such as the IPS forums.

Basically, I thought I could trust all our customers. I'm disappointed to say I was wrong. We've had a report that our product, Fusion Menu, is now available on a warez site. We don't know which one, as the reporter refuses to tell us.

Needless to say, we're disappointed that we in fact can't trust all of our customers. We're pleased that we've gone this long, and that the vast majority of our customers are trustworthy. However, we do have a zero tolerance approach to piracy and to those who encourage and support it.

So from now on, I'm afraid that we can't take the all-trusting approach we used to. It's just not viable. The following rules are in effect:
  • Support will not be provided on third party locations. We will only assist via a support ticket or via this community.
  • Do not ask us to email you updates to Fusion Digital products such as Fusion Menu or ibContact. The only way to download them is via the client download area here on this community.
If the piracy situation gets worse, we may have to resort to more draconian measures for new customers. We don't want to do this, and hope that our customers understand that trust is very easy to lose, and very hard to gain back. We sincerely hope that the piracy does not continue.

"We don't know which one, as the reporter refuses to tell us."

Well I'm afraid if someone said that to me, and refused to give me the warez site then he has something to hide himself, maybe he gave it to them, and knows if you approach the warez site, they would say who gave it to them. I am dead against encoding mate, but I would say to you buddy to encode them, and protect yourself.

The 30 day money back guarantee is another one that people will take advantage of, get the product and then claim a charge back, your products have already proved themselves, along with your support, I would drop the guarantee mate.

Trust is a two way thing you trusted them, and you have been let down, why make it easy to trust you and rip you off even more. Encode your next release, but leave the CSS open for modification. Teach them a lesson.

Thanks for the support Gerry. I wont be jumping on the encoding train yet though, as I personally feel that's a last ditch effort. We're looking at other ways to combat piracy without resorting to callbacks and encoding.

Whether the reporter is the pirate or not, I don't know. They won't tell me what site it is because "it's in a premium invite-only area" and they're "not a snitch". Needless to say, that person is going to be experiencing difficulties downloading future releases. Specifically, "You do not have access to this board".

We don't want to drop the 30 day guarantee either - we haven't yet had somebody utilise that for good or ill. Do be assured though, there are safeguards on that to ensure we aren't just giving money back to scammers.

About Me

Hi, I'm Mat. I'm the Director of Product Development for Fusion Digital Entertainment (yup, that's us!) and I'm responsible for all the development, sales, support, and whatever else we can come up with. If you're looking at our products, and want something else out of them, I'm the guy to fire your request at. I like to stay on the ground floor, so I see pretty much every single bug report, support ticket, and feature request that comes in. This blog is where I chuck out development updates, random tidbits of useless information, and on occasion special offers. But don't tell management!
